EAP Stepping Stones has partnered with local Yoga Instructor, Indra, who teaches children the art of yoga. She uses songs, arts, and games as a means to effectively communicate with the children. The instructor gives opportunities for the children to express themselves via their voices or their movements for healthy brain development.
Indra was initially trained at INSPYA yoga school in Byron Bay, Australia and has also been trained in Prenatal and Kids Yoga by Jacqualine Koay with SunYoga. Indra is internationally certified to teach Yoga and has experience teaching yoga to children typically developing and with special needs.
Yoga offers an opportunity for children to meet new friends, learn a new skill, become disciplined, and increase flexibility. Children 5 to 12 years old that are typically developing or those that have special needs are welcome. Children who attend this group must have the prerequisite skills, which are being generally cooperative and able to manage his / her behaviour, and ideally have imitation skills.
Parents will provide a shadow aide for their child as deemed appropriate or necessary by Stepping Stones Director, Brenda Boehm and Yoga Instructor Indra. The shadow will follow the Yoga Instructor’s directions to prompt the child into the correct movements and actions.
Initially the Yoga Instructor will provide mats, kindly bring your own if you have one.
Yoga activities may include:
- Group play (i.e. arts, sensory activities, music, gross motor activities, following group instructions)
- Social skills activities (i.e. staying with a group, encouraging others, greeting peers and teachers)
- Strength Training
- Building Attention and Focus
- Art work
- Music
Each term, the group will run with a minimum of 4 children and a maximum of 10 children.
