TM X EAP: Supporting Neurodivergent Children During Chinese New Year 🧧

Chinese New Year is a time for joyful reunions, festive meals, and meaningful traditions. However, for neurodivergent children, the celebrations can sometimes feel overwhelming due to noise, crowds, and changes in routine. With thoughtful preparation and understanding, families can create a more comfortable and inclusive experience for their child.
During festive gatherings, children may experience sensory overload from loud fireworks, bright lights, or large crowds. Changes in routine and unfamiliar environments can also create stress. Parents can watch for early warning signs of distress and in more serious cases, children may wander off, making supervision especially important during busy celebrations.
Simple adjustments can help children participate more comfortably. During reunion dinners, parents can serve at least one food the child enjoys, involve them in setting the table to give them a sense of control, and choose quieter seating areas. Families can also prepare children in advance for fireworks using videos and providing noise-cancelling headphones or a quiet space to retreat to. When it comes to receiving Ang Pows, explaining the tradition in simple terms and practicing the interaction with family members beforehand can make the experience more predictable and positive.
Preparation tools can also make a big difference. Social stories help children understand what to expect during events such as family visits or lion dances, while visual schedules can outline the day’s activities, from travelling to visiting relatives. Encouraging children to communicate when they feel uncomfortable—such as saying “I need a break” or “It’s too loud”—also helps them express their needs during busy moments.
With empathy, preparation, and flexibility, families can help neurodivergent children feel more secure and included during Chinese New Year celebrations, allowing everyone to enjoy the festivities together. ✨
