26. What is Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA)?

Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) is a scientific, evidence-based approach that helps children learn meaningful skills while reducing behaviours that interfere with learning and daily life. Rather than focusing solely on reducing challenging behaviours, modern ABA aims to help children become more independent, communicate effectively and participate more fully at home, school and in the community.

Every ABA programme is individualised based on the child’s strengths, challenges and developmental needs. Therapy may focus on areas such as:

  • Communication and language
  • Social interaction
  • Play skills
  • Learning readiness
  • Daily living and self-help skills
  • Emotional regulation
  • Behaviour management
  • School readiness

Today’s ABA has evolved considerably over the past several decades. High-quality ABA emphasises natural learning opportunities, child motivation, play-based teaching and meaningful interactions rather than repetitive drills alone.

At EAP, therapy goals are regularly reviewed and adjusted based on each child’s progress, ensuring that intervention remains relevant and effective throughout their developmental journey.
