50. Can children with autism attend mainstream school?

Many children with autism successfully attend mainstream schools, while others may benefit from specialised educational settings or a combination of both.

At EAP, we look at the following key indicators for school-readiness:

• Ability to follow group instructions
• Ability to follow rules and routines
• Ability to functionally communicate for needs and wants
• Ability to be independent
• Ability to regulate behaviours
• Ability to socialise and interact with peers
• Ability to learn academic concepts

The goal is to identify an educational environment where the child can learn, participate and thrive.

Placement decisions should be reviewed over time as children continue to develop.
